Safety before troubleshooting
Garage Door Safety Tips
A garage door is a large moving system. If it looks damaged, moves unpredictably, or will not stay in position, stop operating it and keep the area clear until it can be evaluated.
Stop using the door when
- A door hanging unevenly or coming out of its tracks
- A visibly broken spring, loose cable, bent track, or damaged panel
- A door that drops, slams, reverses unpredictably, or will not stay open
- Grinding, scraping, smoke, burning odor, or exposed electrical damage
Low-risk observations before you call
- 1. Keep people, pets, vehicles, and stored items clear of the door path.
- 2. Look for an object blocking the opening or photo-eye area without touching springs, cables, or moving hardware.
- 3. Note what happened, which control was used, and whether the opener lights or sounds changed.
- 4. Use the wall control or remote only when the full door opening is visible.
