Two separate doors, one wider opening and very little room overhead: Charlie's Boise garage project needed a coordinated installation. This customer story follows the opening he prepared, the door D&L supplied and the painting and installation sequence that brought the project together.
Originally published on D&L's Boise website in November 2024, this story has been updated for our current website. The customer account is dated April 1, 2024; the installation date is not recorded in the sources available for this article.
The starting point: two doors became one opening
Charlie described an original pair of doors, each 8 feet wide and 7 feet high. He removed them and raised the header to prepare for a single, custom-sized door. His reported new dimensions were 17 feet wide by 7 feet 6 inches high, with approximately 11½ inches above the opening.
That preparation was the homeowner's work. D&L's documented part of the project was supplying the replacement door, coordinating the panels for painting and installing the door and overhead opener.
Planning around the available space
A wide opening is only one part of an installation plan. The equipment also needs room inside the garage. In this case, the limited headroom made the relationship between the door sections, tracks and opener particularly important.
The legacy project record identifies a five-panel C.H.I. Skyline door and a Linear LDCO801 belt-drive opener. These are the products named in that historical account, not a current product recommendation or a claim that either product suits every low-headroom opening. The customer separately confirmed the five-panel arrangement and an opener installed above the door.
Panels first, painting next, installation last
The finish was part of the coordination. D&L brought the panels to Charlie so he could paint them before installation, then returned to install the system. Separating those stages let the homeowner complete his part before the installation visit.
For another project, discuss the finish and who will apply it before ordering. Confirm the chosen product's finishing instructions, the work sequence and what must be ready for installation. The sequence used on one job should not be assumed to be appropriate for every door or finish.

Charlie reported that the installation went well. In his April 2024 account, he wrote:
“They did exactly what they said they were going to do. The installation went great.”

Planning a similar Boise project
Start with a conversation about the opening you have and the result you want. Useful details include the current number of doors, approximate opening dimensions, photographs taken from a safe position and any planned changes to the opening.
Ask the installation team to assess the available space and equipment together before you select a door. Also agree who is responsible for opening preparation, finishing, removal and installation, and which items are included in the written quote. Do not use this customer story as instructions for structural alterations or work on a tensioned door system.

Frequently asked questions
Who prepared the wider opening in Charlie's project?
Charlie reported removing the original doors and raising the header before D&L installed the new door and opener. This story does not attribute the structural alteration to D&L.
What size was the custom door?
The customer's account describes a door 17 feet wide and 7 feet 6 inches high, with approximately 11.5 inches above the opening. Those are reported measurements for this project, not a minimum-clearance specification.
Can the same door and opener arrangement work in my garage?
That requires a site assessment. Opening dimensions, headroom, side room, backroom and the selected door, tracks and opener must be checked together before an installation is specified.
